Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub

Post-punk and alternative rock group Philip Boa and the Voodooclub was formed in Germany in 1985. Led by singer and guitarist Philip Boa – born Ernst Ulrich Figgen in Dortmund, Germany on January 18, 1963 – the group issued their debut album, Philister, in 1985 and followed it the next year with Aristocracie. Both albums reached Number 1 on Germany’s Independent Albums chart and drew attention to their unique and edgy sound. Signing to Polydor Records, they issued the album Copperfield (1988), which rose to Number 47 on the German Albums chart. Their album Hair (1989) featured the group’s breakthrough hit “Container Love,” which climbed to Number 61. Philip Boa and the Voodooclub continued to release a series of hit albums including Hispañola (1990, Number 14), Helios (1991, Number 32), and Boaphenia (1993, Number 10). Philip Boa pursued his interest in heavy metal by creating a side project called Voodoocult and released two albums – Jesus Killing Machine (1994) and Voodoocult (1995) – while also releasing albums under their own name including Alongside God (1994, Number 23) and She (1995, Number 32). Philip Boa and the Voodooclub moved over to RCA Records and issued the albums My Private War (2000, Number 23), The Red (2001, Number 59) and C 90 (2003, Number 46) before returning to the world of independent labels with albums such as Decadence & Isolation (2005, Number 40), and Diamonds Fall (2009, Number 45). The group’s next batch of albums charted higher than anything the band had released since the 1990s: Loyalty (2012, Number 13), Bleach House (2014, Number 7), Fresco – A Collection of 12 New Songs (2016, Number 8), and Earthly Powers (2018, Number 3). To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Boaphenia, the group released an expanded edition of the album which included a bonus album of new songs entitled The Porcelain Files.
