Actress and singer Phillipa Soo was born on May 31, 1990 in Libertyville, Illinois. She is best known for her Tony Award nominated role as Eliza Hamilton in the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, a role that she originated. She’s also known for playing Amélie in the Broadway musical of the same name. Before she began her performing career, she graduated from Libertyville High School (in suburban Chicago) in 2008. She then enrolled in The Juliard School’s acting program, graduating in 2012. She auditioned for the Ars Nova’s production of Dave Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, eventually being cast in the role of Natasha Rostova. The show eventually became a successful Off-Broadway production. This role attracted the attention of Hamilton creators Thomas Kail (director) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (composer). She participated in an early reading in 2014 and was cast as Eliza Hamilton. Soo left the Hamilton production in 2016, taking her final bow on July 9. She then appeared in Amélie, beginning a pre-Broadway run from December 2016 to January 2017 in Los Angeles. The show opened on Broadway in March 2017 but closed three months later on May 21, 2017. She then appeared on Broadway in The Parisian Woman as Rebecca, which had a limited run from November 2017 to March 2018. She has also appeared on television in the series Smash (2013) and The Code (2018). In 2020, Soo appeared in the Netflix animated film Over the Moon. She played the character Chang’e, and performs on the show’s soundtrack. One of the songs sung by Soo is “Ultraluminary”, which became one of the most talked about tracks on the soundtrack.
