Princess Princess

The female J-pop band Princess Princess formed in 1983 and became one of Japan's best-selling acts during the late-'80s, when the group launched a remarkable run of five consecutive Number 1 singles. Bandmates Kaori Kishitani, Kanako Nakayama, Atsuko Watanabe, Tomoko Konno, and Kyōko Tomita released their debut single, "Koi wa Balance," in 1987, along with the debut album Teleportation. The group's member shared songwriting credits on Teleportation, and the album hit number 38 on the Oricon Albums chart. Here We Are climbed all the way to number 8 in 1988 and eventually went platinum. Here We Are's most popular song, "Go Away Boy," became a Top 20 hit, but that success paled in comparison to Princess Princess' string of Number 1 singles, which began with 1989's triple-platinum "Diamonds." "Sekai de Ichiban Atsui Natsu" reached Number 1 that same year, with three additional songs — "Oh Yeah!," "Julian," and "Kiss" — all following in 1990 and early 1991. Also reaching Number 1 were the albums Lovers (1989), Princess Princess (1990), Dolls in Action (1991), Singles 1987–1992 (1992), and Bee-Beep (1993). Majestic paused at number 2 in 1993, and the group's final release, The Last Princess, reached number 10 in 1995. The group toured in 1996 before officially disbanding, with Kaori Kishitani launching a solo tour during the second half of the '90s. The group's music remained popular during the decades that followed, with "Sekaide Ichiban Atsui Natsu" hitting number 29 on Japan's Top 100 Deezer chart in late 2023.
