Rajnigandha Shekhawat – born on November 18, 1975, in Jaipur, Rajasthan – is a Princess (of Malsisar, Rjasthan, India) and singer best known for her Rajasthani folk and English mashups. Trained in Indian classical music, she has also been a playback singer for several Bollywood films. The daughter of Dr. Bahawani Singh – Royal Highness / Thakur Sahab of Malsisar – she earned a master’s degree in music before becoming the first singer from Rajasthan to pursue a career in music. She released her debut album, Soul of the Desert, in 2006. In 2009, she created a social media account and began posting videos that featured her singing and performing. Interested in both folk music from Rajasthan and Western pop music, she began to create unique mashups where she’d perform songs that would mix language from her homeland with English. Her most popular mashups include 2017’s “Cheap Thrills” (featuring Ghumar), “Shape of You,” and “Single Ladies.” This unique style earned her the nickname ‘MahaRani of Mashups’ in India. Some of her Bollywood playback recordings include “Tattoo” (from the 2014’s Monsoon Shootout), “Aai’s Aalaap” (from 2014’s Margarita with a Straw), “Badri Ki Dulhania” (from 2017’s Badri Ki Dulhania), and “Laalam Laal” (from 2021’s Kaagaz).
