Real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar, American rapper Rich Homie Quan was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 4, 1989. Interested in a career as a professional baseball player, he eventually abandoned this activity in favor of rap. Influenced by the Dirty South style, he recorded the first in a long series of mixtapes, I Go In on Every Song (2012), followed the same year by Still Going In. In 2013, it was with the track "Type of Way", ranked #7 on the rap/R&B charts and #50 on the Billboard Hot 100, that he met with notoriety. He went on to collaborate on "My Nigga" by YG and Young Jeezy, then with 2 Chainz, without ceasing his string of mixtapes, totaling a dozen over the decade. In 2014, "Walk Thru" was another hit with Problem's participation, as were "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)" (#4 in the rap charts) and "Ride Out" (#8) in 2015, with Kid Ink, Tyga, Wale and YG. Finally, 2018 saw the release of his first and only album Rich as in Spirit, featuring a guest appearance by Rick Ross. It reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200, before the release of the EPs Coma (2019) and Family & Mula (2022). On the morning of September 5, 2024, he was found unconscious in his Atlanta home and died in hospital, aged 34.
