Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on June 10, 1984, playback singer Sucharitha Thyagarajan is better known by the names Rita or Rita Thyagarajan. Introduced to classical music at a young age, she began studying Carnatic music at the age of five. Her studies switched to Hindustani classical music while also earning a bachelor’s degree in design. After college, she submitted a demo CD to film composer / music director D. Imman, who hired her to perform “Yendan Varungaalaveetukaraney” (from the 2005 film Aanai), which was her first recording as a playback singer. Since her debut, she has recorded over 300 songs in several different languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English. After recording many songs over the next few years, she had her big break with 2009’s “Vada Mapillai” (from Villu), which won Best Song of the Year at the Radio Mirchi Music Awards. Some of her most popular recordings include “Khilaadikoona” (from 2007’s Athidhi), “Allegra” (from 2009’s Kandasamy), “Vilaiyaadu Mankatha” (from 2011’s Mankatha), and “Yaayum” (from 2019’s Sagaa). Rita Thyagarajan has worked with many popular music directors including Ilaiyaraaja, S.S. Thaman, Mani Sharma, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and many others.
