Born Ronald Cheng Chung-kei on March 9, 1972 in British Hong Kong, Ronald Cheng is a mandopop/cantopop singer, songwriter, and actor. Initially, Cheng began his career behind the scenes doing work for his father, who as the Director of EMI, Asia. He also supplied backing vocals for artists such as Alan Tam and Priscilla Chan. Producers took note of his voice and signed him to the label. He released two Mandarin albums in 1996: In a Dilemma and Don’t Love Me. The following year, he released the Cantonese album Deep Love and the Mandarin releases You Are My Dearest Lover (EP), Don’t Say! Love You, and Abstain From Love. He continued to release successful albums, but after a highly-publicized scuffle on an airplane in 2000, his popularity waned. He began working as an on-screen actor with 2000’s Twelve Nights. He starred in over a dozen films while his recording career slowed down during the same time period. He finally gained traction on the music charts again with 2005’s hit single “Rascal”, which was a commercial success. Cheng continued to release new music up through 2008 but has focused on his movie career ever since.
