Rone

Electronic music producer and musician Erwan Castex – born on June 20, 1980, in Boulogne Billancourt, France – is better known by his stage name, Rone. Growing up in Paris, he studied cinema before he turned his attention to electronic music and started writing his own music using a synthesizer and a computer. His first EP, Bora, was released in 2008 and the title track was chosen by DJ / producer Agoria for inclusion on his mix compilation At the Controls. This raised his profile and caught the attention of the electronic music community. In 2009, Rone issued his debut album, Spanish Breakfast, which was named one of the ‘Top 25 Best Albums of 2009’ by Electronic Beats. Rone’s popularity began to spread internationally, and he undertook tours in several countries including Japan. Rone then relocated to Berlin, Germany and released the So So So EP (2011) followed by the critically acclaimed album Tohu Bohu (2012). The album was then given the remix treatment by artists such as Juan Atkins and Chris Clark and issued as Tohu Bonus in 2013. That same year, his busy schedule included undertaking his first tour in the US. In 2015, he released his third studio album, Creatures, which included guest appearances from Etienne Daho, Japanese trumpeter Toshinori Kondo, The National’s Bryce Dessner, and others. Rone also remixed tracks for other artists including Blonde Redhead, Breton, Max Cooper, Yael Naim, Jabberwocky, and many others. Using his background in film studies, he directed the first virtual reality video for his 2015 single “Quitter la ville.” Further albums included Mirapolis (2017), Room With a View (2020), and Rone & Friends (2021), which featured collaborations with Dominique A, Camélia Jordana, Georgia, Casper Clausen, and many others. In 2017, Rone was given the honor of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Minister of Culture. In 2023, Rone released the album L(oo)ping, which featured him performing with the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Chamber Choir Spirito, Cubenx (Cesar Urbina), and conductor Dirk Brossé.
