Segun Bucknor (29 March 1946 – 11 August 2017) was a Nigerian musician and journalist active during the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Lagos, he attended King’s College and Columbia University, where he honed his musical skills. Bucknor began with the Hot Four band in 1964 before forming Segun Bucknor and the Assembly in 1969. Influenced by Ray Charles, the band transitioned from soul to afrobeat, releasing hits like "Lord Give Me Soul" and political tracks such as "Son of 15 January" and "Sorrow, Sorrow, Sorrow". His bold political messages led to threats, prompting his retirement in 1975. Bucknor then shifted to journalism, focusing on political corruption. He led a quieter life in the 1980s and 1990s but occasionally reappeared musically in the 2000s. Married to Sola Bucknor, he had two daughters, Tosyn Bucknor and Funke Bucknor-Obruthe. Bucknor died on 11 August 2017 in Lagos after battling multiple strokes and health issues.
