Defying the traditional conceptions of religious music, the Christian rock band Silent Planet celebrate its beliefs amid a bombast of heavy, screeching hardcore thunder. Led by frontman Garrett Russell and guitarist Spencer Keene, the group formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2009. The musicians united around a love of groups like Dillinger Escape Plan, Refused, Burning Bridges, and Underoath, as well as a shared sense of purpose driven by their faith. Naming themselves after a CS Lewis novel, their songs addressed serious issues such as PTSD, sex trafficking, the Hiroshima bomb and Native American history on debut album The Night God Slept, but still managed to thrash with explosive metal riffs. That ferocious energy landed them support slots with For Today and Enter Shikari and a place on the legendary Vans Warped Tour in 2016, while the EP Lastsleep (1944-1946) continued to build their righteous, intense, progressive-metal sound. Released through Solid State Records in 2016, their second album Everything Was Sound captured the band at their most confident and passionate, topping both the US Christian and Hard Rock Billboard charts. 2018's When the End Began, 2021's Iridescent, and 2023's Superbloom followed, with Superbloom producing the hit singles "Antimatter" and "Dreamwalker."
