The indie-rock band Sir Chloe formed in 2017 in Bennington, Vermont, where singer Dana Foote was a senior at Bennington College. A music composition student, Foote assembled a small band to perform her original music in lieu of writing a traditional thesis. Guitarist/producer Teddy O’Mara, drummer Willy Giambalvo, and bassist Pixel West joined her for the project, forming the core of Sir Chloe's original lineup. Austin Holmes and Palmer Foote were added to the roster shortly thereafter, and Sir Chloe released its debut single, "Animal," in February 2019. A second single, "Michelle," arrived two months later and became a viral sensation on TikTok. Tracks like "Untie You," "Easy on You," and "July" were all released during the first half of 2020, followed by the band's first EP, Party Favors, that October. Sir Chloe's unique sound — a mix of contemporary indie-rock and various left-field influences, including Balkan music classical compositions — continued to earn attention from the music industry, and the band signed with Atlantic Records in early 2023. "Hooves," the group's first major-label single, was released that February, followed by "Salivate" and "Know Better." All three singles appeared on I Am the Dog, the band's debut album, which appeared in May 2023.
