Widely regarded as one of the best-selling J-rock acts of all time, Southern All Stars formed in the Kanagawa Prefecture in 1977. Its original lineup consisted of lead singer and guitarist Keisuke Kuwata, keyboardist Yuko Hara, bass player Kazuyuki Sekiguchi, drummer Hiroshi Matsuda, percussionist Hideyuki "Kegani" Nozawa, and guitarist Takashi Omori, who left the group in 2001. "Katte ni Sindbad," their debut single, appeared in 1978 and reached Number 3 on the Oricon charts. This success was followed by the release of their first full-length Atsui Munasawagi in 1978 and 10 Number Carat (1979), which included the popular ballad "Itoshi no Ellie." Ever since Southern All Stars released their third LP Tiny Bubbles in 1980, each and every one of their albums has topped the Oricon Albums Chart. Young Love, considered by many as their finest effort, saw the light in 1996 and sold over 2 million copies. Even though they went on an extended break from their recording career after 2005's Killer Street, Keisuke Kuwata and company reconvened a decade later, releasing their fifteenth album Budō in 2015. Their second official compilation, 海のOh, Yeah!!, came out in 2018 and entered the Japanese charts at Number 86.
