Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana was born in Melbourne, Australia on June 15, 1995. Coming to prominence in 2016 with the single “Jungle”, Tash Sultana – who is non-binary and identifies as ‘they/their’ – has become both a critical darling and a commercial success. Tash Sultana’s musical journey began at the age of 3 when they were given a guitar by their grandfather. They eventually learned to play numerous instruments over the years including keyboards, drums, bass, mandolin, saxophone, flute, and several other instruments. Tash Sultana’s unique blend of many musical styles also incorporates sampling, beat-making, and looping. With a five-octave vocal range, they began impressing audiences during impromptu open mic performances in clubs and while busking on the streets. In 2008, they became the vocalist in a local band called Mindpilot, a quartet that eventually fell apart by 2012. Writing and recording their own songs at home, Tash Sultana released their debut EP, Yin Yang, on digital platforms in 2013. Three years later, they caught the attention of the internet when they shared the song “Jungle” on social media. Within five days, the song had already reached one million views and kickstarted Tash Sultana’s musical career. In 2016, they released the Notion EP (including “Jungle”), which reached Number 8 on the Australian ARIA chart. Tash Sultana then undertook a world tour before releasing their debut album, Flow State, in 2018. The album rose to Number 2 in Australia and landed in the Top 30 in Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. The album included the charting singles “Murder to the Mind”, “Mystik”, and “Salvation”. Tash Sultana undertook several tours and collaborated on tracks with Matt Corby and Milky Chance. In February 2021, Tash Sultana released their second album, Terra Firma, to critical acclaim. The album reached the Number 1 position in Australia and was also a success in New Zealand (Number 12) and Germany (Number 7). They followed their sophomore album with the release of MTV Unplugged: Live in Melbourne in June 2022. Over the course of their career, Tash Sultana has been honored with many awards including several from the National Live Music Awards, the Pop Awards, the J Awards, the ARIA Music Awards, and the Rolling Stone Australia Awards.
