The Coyote Sisters

American female pop-rock trio, The Coyote Sisters was formed in 1980 by Leah Kunkel, Renée Armand and Marty Gwinn Townsend, who had each recorded solo albums in the previous decade. Originally from Maryland, where she was born on June 15, 1948, Leah Kunkel is the younger sister of "Mama" Cass Elliott, the iconic lead singer of The Mama's & the Papa's, and the wife of studio musician Russ Kunkel. Signed to Geffen Records in 1982, the trio left the label for Motown subsidiary Morocco Records, which released The Coyote Sisters album in 1984, featuring the No. 66 hit "Straight from the Heart (Into Your Life)" and "I've Got a Radio". As the group was made up of three singers, the album was produced in Laurel Canyon with musicians from the Californian scene, under the guidance of producers David J. Holman and Roger Paglia. The singers went their separate ways before reuniting in 2001. This time, Renée Armand devoted herself to the lyrics performed by Leah Kunkel and Marty Gwinn on the album Women and Other Visions, produced for Wannadate Records, before going their separate ways again. Leah Kunkel died on November 26, 2024 at the age of 76.
