The Folk Implosion is best known for the alternative rock single "Natural One," which reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 45 in the UK during the mid-1990s. The band was co-founded by Lou Barlow (also an original member of Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr.) and John Davis in 1993. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the duo debuted with Walk Through This World with the Folk Implosion, a cassette-only EP that introduced The Folk Implosion as a lo-fi rock act. The full-length Take a Look Inside followed in 1994. One year later, the band provided much of the music for the film Kids, including the popular single "Natural One." The song became a gold-certified hit in America, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and number 20 on Mainstream Rock. "Natural One" marked The Folk Implosion's commercial peak, and although the band sought to maintain its momentum with 1997's Dare to Be Surprised and 1999's One Part Lullaby, neither album managed to chart. After Davis left the band, Barlow released 2003's The New Folk Implosion before focusing on other projects for the majority of two decades. He revived The Folk Implosion during the 2020s, releasing a single in 2022 and an EP, It Just Goes With, in 2023.
