The Wynners

Formed in 1973 in Hong Kong, teen idol pop group The Wynners was assembled by manager Pato Leung. Lead vocalist Alan Tam, lead guitarist Bennett Pang, bassist Danny Yip, and drummer Anthony Chan were originally in a group called The Loosers and with the addition of Kenny Bee (lead vocals / guitar / keyboards), the group was renamed The Wynners. Their debut album, Listen to the Wynners, was released in 1974 and was a huge success. During this early period in the band’s career, they focused on singing English-language versions of songs that were hits in other countries including “Sha-La-La-La-La” (originally by Danish band The Walkers). The Wynners continued to release hit albums including Love and Other Places (1975) and Some Kind of Magic (1976), which included their cover of Brotherhood of Man’s “Save Your Kisses for Me.” The group’s popularity in the charts led to a career in films including Let’s Rock (1975), Gonna Get You (1976), and Making It (1978). For the film Let’s Rock, the band also started introducing Cantopop songs into their repertoire, singing select songs in Cantonese. In 1978, The Wynners went on hiatus and each of the members pursued a solo career. While the group came together throughout the years to perform live, they never made the reunion permanent. In 2023, the members of the group came together to record a new song “From Beginning to Now,” which climbed to Number 26 in China.
