Trampled by Turtles

One of the most popular progressive and contemporary bluegrass bands, Trampled by Turtles was founded in 2003 in Duluth, Minnesota. Around singer and guitarist Dave Simonett have been present from the outset Erik Berry (mandolin), Dave Carroll (banjo) and Tim Saxhaug (bass), joined in 2007 by Ryan Young (fiddle) and in 2014 by Eamonn McLain (cello). What began as Simonett's side project became his priority, infusing bluegrass with his folk and Americana influences, as well as his taste for fast-paced tunes. Trampled by Turtles established themselves in the traditional scene, which they shook up with their audacity and independent style, forging their reputation with albums released on their BanjoDad label, Songs from a Ghost Town (2004), Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007), before gradually establishing themselves in the bluegrass charts with Duluth (#8 in 2008) and their first #1 Palomino (2010), which remained in the genre's top ten for fifty-two weeks in a row. The band becomes a festival phenomenon, and two years later Stars and Satellites enters the Billboard 200 at #32. Appearing at mainstream events such as Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bumbershoot, Trampled by Turtles chose to record the album Live at First Avenue (2013) live in a famous Minnesota club. In 2014, the album Wild Animals reached No. 29 on the Billboard 200, attracting indie folk fans more than bluegrass with its darker atmosphere. The band moved into a small rural studio to record their ninth album Life Is Good on the Road (2018), back at the top of the bluegrass charts. After several years' absence caused by the Covid-19 pandemic since the Sigourney Fever EP (2019), it was in the company of producer Jeff Tweedy that they made their return in 2022 with the album Alpenglow, followed by the Always Here EP in 2024.
