The multi-national classical supergroup Trio Zimmermann consists of German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, French violist Antoine Tamestit, and Swiss cellist Christian Poltéra. While each has achieved great success as a solo artist, they came together in 2007 at Zimmermann’s suggestion in order to explore the rarely utilized format of a string trio. While maintaining their individual careers, they tour together regularly, and released five albums for the highly regarded Scandinavian classical label BIS in the 2010s. Their recording work includes a pair of albums, 2011’s Beethoven: String Trios, Op. 9 and 2014’s Beethoven: String Trio; Serenade that earned praise for playing material rarely heard on record or in concert halls. In 2019 they released Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations, an album that tackled a string arrangement of a revered piece that was written originally for harpsichord and is played on piano in most modern interpretations.
