Born on June 5, 1995, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Troye Sivan Mellet is an example of how the music business in modern times has been turned on its head by social media. Known professionally simply as Troye Sivan, he is a skilled manipulator of social media and promoted himself as a singer on video-streaming platforms and by entering Australian talent competitions. His highly influential Internet presence was established long before he began to look for a record deal and when he did eventually sign to EMI he hid the news from his followers for over a year. Troye Sivan started out as a teenage actor and at the age of 14 appeared in X-Men Origins portraying the character Wolverine as a boy. He also starred as the main character in the Spud teen film trilogy. Despite having a relatively modest singing and songwriting talent, his self-promotion skills garnered over 4 million subscribers to his streaming channel, prompting Time magazine to cite him as one of the 25 most influential teens of 2014. After his 2015 EP Wild topped the ARIA charts and cracked the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 thanks to its title track, Troye Sivan delivered his highly anticipated studio debut Blue Neighborhood in December of that year, entering the Top 10 in Australia, the US, New Zealand, and Sweden. Driven by hit singles such as "Youth" and "Talk Me Down," the album went platinum in Australia and received gold certification on both sides of the Atlantic. The guitar-oriented Bloom, his sophomore effort, fared just as well, peaking at number 4 in the United States. The album featured the Ariana Grande collaboration "Dance to This" and received a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2018 Aria Music Awards. A few months later, "Revelation," his contribution to the soundtrack of the film Boy Erased, was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Released amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, his fifth extended play In a Dream veered towards dance pop and was promoted through the singles "Take Yourself Home," "Easy," and "Rager Teenager." Following a lengthy international tour, as well as a starring role on the Weeknd-produced series The Idol, Troye Sivan finally returned in 2023 with his third full-length album, Something to Give Each Other, preceded by the single "Rush."
