Unleashed

Formed in Stockholm in 1989, Unleashed's longevity has made them one of Sweden's death metal stalwarts. Comprising bassist and vocalist Johnny Hedlund, guitarists Fredrik Lindgren and Tomas Måsgard, and drummer Anders Schultz, the band signed with German label Century Media on the strength of a demo tape, and in 1991 released their debut album Where No Life Dwells, on which the recurring themes of Nordic culture were already apparent in their lyrics. Driven by powerful, melodic death metal, subsequent albums Shadows in the Deep (1992), Across the Open Sea (1993) and Victory (1995) explore the darker zones of the human soul, the occult forces of the universe and the conquests of the Vikings. In 1995, Fredrik Lindgren left Unleashed to devote himself to his hardcore/punk band Loud Pipes, under the pseudonym Freddie Eugene. He continued with Terra Firma, Celestial Pain, Born of Fire, Arms Way and Atlantic Tide, before passing away on January 5, 2025 at the age of 53. It was with his successor, Fredrik Folkare, that Warrior (1997) was recorded, before a five-year break during which the musicians devoted themselves to their family life. Returning in 2002 with Hell's Unleashed, the quartet also resumed touring with Sworn Allegiance (2004), followed by Midvinterblot (2006), which ushered in a new contract with Steamhammer Records. After a European Master of Death Tour with Entombed, Grave and Dismember, Unleashed embarked on another American tour, then returned to the studio for the album Hammer Battalion (2008). The adventure continues under the Nuclear Blast Records label, with albums As Yggdrasil Trembles (2010), Odalheim (2012), Dawn of the Nine (2015), The Hunt for White Christ (2018) and No Sign of Life (2021).
