Born into a family of pastors from father to son, William Henry Murphy III was born in Detroit on August 2, 1973. He established his ministry in 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia, where he officiates at New Birth Church, and in 2006 founded The dReam Center Church, whose congregation includes singer Tasha Cobbs, who takes part in the sessions for several of his albums. His gospel career began in 2005 with the Epic Records release of All Day, which reached number 22 on Billboard's Top Gospel chart. Two years later, the pastor signed The Sound, released on the Central South label and ranked #23 on the same chart. Self-produced in 2011, his 3rd album We Are One peaked at #16, a performance noted by Verity Records, who hired the artist and financed the following album God Chaser, which achieved its highest ranking at #3 on the gospel charts and #90 on the Billboard 200. Nominated for Best Gospel Album at the 56th Grammy Awards, William Murphy failed to win a trophy, but continued to attract a large audience with the following albums Demonstrate (2016), Settle Here (2019) and Worship & Justice (2022), featuring rapper Common. In 2025, his new live track, "Double", reached No. 8 on the Top 10 Gospel Digital Songs chart.
