Woody Platt is best known for founding and leading the bluegrass band Step Canyon Rangers, and playing alongside actor and banjo player Steve Martin. Born Alfred Francis Platt III in Brevard, North Carolina, he was a student at Chapel Hill State University when he began playing music with Graham Sharp and Charles Humphrey III. The trio soon became a band with the addition of Mike Guggino, then Nicky Sanders. Completed in 2000, the Step Canyon Rangers group recorded six albums with growing success, before collaborating with actor Steve Martin, also known for his passion for bluegrass. In 2009, Rare Bird Alert reached #1 on the bluegrass charts and #43 on the Billboard 200, and three years later, Nobody Knows You, released in 2012, won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. In April 2022, Woody Platt decided to leave the band he had founded to pursue a solo career, which began with the single "One Last Goodbye", on which he was joined by Jerry Douglas, Barry Bales, Rob McCoury, Darren Shumaker, Jason Carter and Buddy Melton. His first solo album Far Away with You (2024), featuring guest appearances by Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott, Del McCoury and Shannon Withworth, reached No. 3 in the bluegrass charts.
