Yann Tiersen

Composer and multi-instrumentalist, Yann Tiersen's musical sphere includes alternative and experimental rock, minimalist neo-classicism and film music. In 2001, the success of the feature film Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain gave the musician international exposure. Born in Brest on June 23, 1970, he studied violin and piano at the conservatory and began composing for the stage, in particular theater. Several of his early pieces are featured on his first instrumental album La Valse des Monstres (1995), followed by the minimalist compositions of Rue des Cascades (1996), Le Phare (1997) and Tout Est Calme (1999), as well as his first film scores for La Vie Rêvée des Anges (1998) and L'Absente (2000). Jean-Pierre Jeunet's commission for the musical illustration of his feature film Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001), brought the Breton composer a wider audience thanks to the international success of the character played by Audrey Tautou. Although he composed other scores for the cinema, notably Good Bye Lenin! (2003) and Tabarly (2008), and produced an album with American composer Shannon Wright in 2004, Yann Tiersen's music evolved in a more experimental style. His albums include Dust Lane (2010), Skyline (2011), ∞ (2014) and EUSA (2016), inspired by his home island of Ouessant and recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios. The album All, released in 2019 and featuring collaborations with his wife Emilie Tiersen, Denez Prigent, Ólavur Jákupsson and Anna von Hausswolff, is succeeded the same year by Portrait, with contributions from Stephen O'Malley, Gruff Rhys, Jens L. Thomsen, John Grant and Kazu Makino. In 2021, the album of minimalist, electronic compositions Kerber is produced with Gareth Jones.
