American rapper Young M.A (the M.A means “Me Always”) was born Katorah Hortense Marrero on April 3, 1992 in New York City. Encouraged into music as a child by her mother, she began working on rhymes while still a girl growing up in Virginia. She developed a hardcore style tackling topics male gangsta rappers regularly address, and moved back to Brooklyn to start her music career. She garnered attention as a member of RedLyfe, and signed with Duck Down for her debut single, “Body Bag”. Her breakthrough came with the 2016 single “Ooouuu”, a quadruple platinum seller that landed her in the top 5 of the rap and R&B charts and reached number 19 on the pop chart. The track was included in her 2017 EP Herstory. That same year, Young M.A was nominated for Best New Artist at both the BET Awards and the MTV Music Video Awards. In 2019 she dropped her debut LP, Herstory in the Making, which got to number 16 on the American album chart and boasted singles like “PettyWap” and “Big”. After the 2020 EP Red Flu, she scored a popular music video with “Beatbox Freestyle” in 2021.
