The Taiwanese folk rock band Your Woman Sleep With Others (the Taiwanese name is slang for a cuckold) formed in 2015 when Feng Huiyuan, Zhang Lichang, and Tong Weishuo decided to join forces in order to compete at college music contests. They were eventually joined by Shai Jiaying and Liao Jiemin, and the quintet achieved success at various competitions with their song “Stable Life, Suffer Exams”. Their 2017 debut EP Stolen Childhood set out their lyrical agenda that takes a critical look at their country’s education system and an empathetic acceptance of Taiwanese children forced to succeed and compete at all costs. The EP included the popular track “Teens Edge” as well as “Cram Schools Killed the Children”, which captured the Best Folk Single trophy at the 2018 Golden Indie Awards. Their 2019 album I Examine Myself Three Times a Day takes its title from the philosophical concept of self-interrogation to ensure that you are acting sincerely with others and yourself. The lyrics of songs like “Sleepless Nights and Haunting Memories” and “Where Is My Ex?” tackle more adult problems, showing a progression in their work and art even while the majority of the band members remained college students.
