The Chinese actor and singer Huang Zitao was born in Qingdao, Shandong in 1993 and performs under the stage name Z. Tao. He grew up listening to the music of Taiwanese artist Jay Chou and cites him as being one of his primary musical influences. Huang's career began in 2010 after he was spotted by a talent scout from SM Entertainment, one of Asia's most powerful and influential management companies. He was drafted in as the third member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo and projected into the pop business limelight. Unfortunately, Huang quickly became disenchanted with the control exercised by SM Entertainment over their roster of artists and he tried to extricate himself from the ten-year contract he had signed. After a period of legal wrangles with SM Entertainment the Chinese courts ruled that Huang was entitled to use his name and image for solo activities within China. Huang's first release as a solo artist was an EP released in 2015 titled 'Tao' and it sold 670,000 copies in its first week. He has since become one of China's up-and-coming pop talents and has developed a successful acting career alongside his singing talents.
