Alex Reece is a pioneering British drum’n’bass producer and DJ whose jazz-infused style helped shape the sound of the genre’s first wave of mainstream recognition. Emerging from London’s fertile jungle scene in the early 1990s, he initially worked as a studio engineer before releasing tracks on influential labels such as Moving Shadow and Basement. His big break came when Goldie signed him to Metalheadz, where his sleek, musical approach stood out from the darker, more ragga-influenced tracks of the time. He is best known for his 1995 single “Pulp Fiction”, released on Metalheadz, which became an underground anthem and one of drum’n’bass’s most recognisable tracks, with its rolling breakbeat, moody bassline, and stripped-back minimalism. The tune was so iconic that it crossed into the UK mainstream and remains a touchstone of the genre. His 1996 debut album So Far (Island/4th & Broadway) blended drum’n’bass with downtempo, trip-hop, and jazz influences, cementing his reputation as an innovator who brought musicality and crossover appeal to the scene. Though his discography is relatively compact compared to some of his peers, Alex Reece’s influence endures: his fusion of jazz chords, atmospheric pads, and liquid-smooth beats helped lay the foundations for what became known as liquid funk. In 2025, his "Pulp Fiction" classic was remixed by Benny L for the "30 Years of Metalheadz VIP, Pt.2" single release.
