Amber Liu, known mononymously as Amber, is an American singer-songwriter and rapper who first caught the world's attention as a member of the South Korean girl group f(x). Born on September 18, 1992, in Los Angeles, California, Amber was drawn to music at a young age. Her talent was recognized early on when she was recruited as a trainee by the South Korean entertainment company SM Entertainment in 2008. This marked her journey into the world of K-pop, making her debut with f(x) in 2009. The group, known for their eclectic style, made waves with their innovative music and unique aesthetics, quickly capturing global attention. With f(x), she released four full-length albums, with Pinocchio (2011), Pink Tape (2013), Red Light (2014), and 4 Walls (2015) all reaching Number 1 on South Korea's Circle Chart. Their 2013 mini-album Electric Shock marked a significant high point in the group's career, selling over 90,000 copies in its first week and reaching the top of the charts in South Korea while also charting in Japan and the United States. Following a series of appearances in the TV shows Invincible Youth, Show Champion, and A Song for You, Amber launched her solo career in 2015 with the release of her debut EP, Beautiful. The extended play peaked at Number 2 on Billboard's World Albums chart and featured the Top 20 single "Shake That Brass" with Taeyeon. In 2018, Amber made her move into the American music scene with the English-language mixtape Rogue Rouge. After parting ways with SM Entertainment in 2019, Amber signed with Steel Wool Entertainment, making her debut for the label with the EP X in 2020. Over the next few years, she delivered two more extended plays for Steel Wool—y? (2021) and Z! (2022)—and became a coach on the fourth season of the Chinese singing competition Produce Camp 2021. In 2023, the Mandarin version of her single "No More Sad Songs" entered the Chinese Top 100 at Number 75.
