Jazz vocalist and composer Andreas Schaerer was born in Visp, Switzerland on December 17, 1976. He is best known for his unique and eclectic vocal styles, often incorporated several into the same song. His early musical career began as a guitarist in punk band Hektor Lebt, before he decided to study singing. At Bern Music School, he learned vocal art and improvisation, as well as composition. He formed jazz sextet Hildegard Lernt Fliegen and they released their self-titled album in 2007. They followed that up with the 2009 album …Vom Fernen Kern Der Sache. Schaerer then collaborated with bass player Bänz Oester on the album Shibboleth (2010). Hildegard Lernt Fliegen toured Europe, China and Russia. They released the live album Cinéma Hildegard - Live in Russia & Elsewhere in 2012. Schaerer continued to record and tour with Hildegard Lernt Fliegen as well as collaborating with a variety of artists including Bobby McFerrin (the improvised opera Bobble in Basel and Moscow), Soweto Kinch, Christy Dorans, Colin Vallon, Elina Duni, and many others. More than a decade after forming Hildegard Lernt Fliegen, he continues to tour and record. The band released the album The Waves are Rising, Dear! in 2020.
