Cindy Yen

Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter Cindy Wu (吳欣雲), better known by her stage name, Cindy Yen (袁詠琳), was born on November 14th, 1986 in Houston, Texas, where she would be most often found behind a piano for much of her early life. After securing a double-major in piano performance and broadcast journalism from her local university, she unsuccessfully entered American Idol in 2008, although enjoyed a different kind of breakthrough the next year, winning the title of Miss Chinatown USA before relocating to Taiwan. Inking a deal with Cantopop sensation Jay Chou’s label, JVR Music, in 2009, Yen served as their first signing. With a sound encompassing contemporary American influences including R&B and hip-hop, she offered a unique selling point to Mandarin-language audiences—one which proved an instant success. Yen’s first single, a duet with Chou entitled “Sand Painting”, became Taiwan’s best-selling ringtone, topping the KTV charts. Her ensuing self-titled debut album, also released in 2009, was equally popular, claiming the number one spot on KKBox’s national charts for four consecutive weeks. Incorporating feminist themes into her follow-up LP, the dance-leaning 2 Be Different (2011), Yen soon picked up a Beijing MTV Super Award and two Beijing Music Awards for the album, whilst spring-boarding a successful acting career alongside her musical pursuits. Her third album, Fight for Love, emerged in 2015, with a new EP, The Moment, following in 2018. After contributing themes to various TV shows, she returned in 2020 with a run of singles including “乘風破浪” and “21 Days”.
