Gunda Merced y Su Salsa Fever is a Puerto Rican salsa group founded by Julio “Gunda” Merced, a talented musician and composer from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. After studying at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and honing his skills in renowned groups like Roberto Angleró, Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound, and the Puerto Rico All Stars, Gunda Merced launched his own band in the late 1970s. Salsa Fever quickly gained recognition with hits like "No Hay Vuelta Atrás," "Dicen," and "El Divorcio de Papi," performed by vocalist Papo Sánchez. Later, Luisito Carrión joined the group, delivering classics like "Renta de Amor," "Julián," and "Aguas Negras." Known for their innovative arrangements that blend traditional salsa with contemporary flair, the group released notable albums including Salsa Fever Orchestra (1979), Que Vivan los Estudiantes (1980), Y Algo Más! (1987), and Distinto y Diferente (2003). Working under labels like Top Hits (TH) and Musical Productions (MP), Gunda Merced y Su Salsa Fever cemented their legacy as a timeless and forward-thinking salsa ensemble, celebrated for their vibrant sound and enduring contributions to Puerto Rican music.
