Drawing inspiration from environmental subjects and 1970s boogie, disco, and soul, Canadian DJ and producer Jayda Guy, better known as Jayda G, is a rare breed of electronic musician. Throughout her career, she has performed at some of the world’s top festivals and has done remixes for artists like HAIM, Little Dragon, and Perel. Classically trained in piano and violin, Guy grew up listening to blues, jazz, and early R&B during her infancy and soon became an avid record collector. While living in LA, she developed an infatuation for house music that would stay with her through the years and inspired her to start recording her own material in 2014. Shortly after moving back to Vancouver, she teamed up with Norway’s DJ Fett Burger to co-found the Freakout Cult Label, through which the pair released “NYC Party Track” and “Velvet Vortex.” Following the release of her first two EPs, Sixth Spirit of the Bay and Jaydaisms in 2016, she relocated to Berlin in order to keep up with her busy touring schedule. Preceded by the standalone single “Diva Bitch” (2018), Significant Changes (2019) came right after Guy completed her Master’s Degree in Resource and Environmental Management and was heavily informed by both her thesis subject and Chicago’s house music legacy. She followed up in 2020 with Both of US / Are You Down, an uplifting 5-track EP produced by British songwriter Fred Again that once again showcased Guy’s knack for making music that sounds intimate and energetic at the same time. The EP was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Dance Recording. Her volume of the famed mix series DJ-Kicks hit the shelves in 2021, followed by her third studio album, Guy, in 2023.
