Jeanette

Regarded as a Latin pop legend, Jeanette (born Janette Anne Dimech on October 10, 1951) is a British-born Spanish singer whose tear-jerking romantic ballads captivated audiences throughout the world. During the ‘60s, she was a member of folk-pop outfit Pic-Nic, which topped the Spanish charts in 1967 with their hit single “Cállate niña.” Following the dissolution of the group, she released “Soy rebelde” in 1971, her first international hit. The song enjoyed immense popularity in Spanish-speaking countries and was released in several languages, including English, French, and Japanese. Palabras, promesas... (1973), her proper debut album, featured the aforementioned single and some songs written by the then-unknown José Luis Perales. Her song “Porque te vas,” (1974) also written by Perales, reached the top of the European charts after being included in Carlos Saura’s film, Cría Cuervos (1976). After the chanson-inspired commercial flop Todo es nuevo (1977), Jeanette made a triumphant comeback in 1981 with the award-winning Corazón de poeta, a major milestone in her career, both commercially and popularity-wise. The album was certified gold twice and included the singles “Frente a frente,” “Corazón de poeta,” and “El muchacho de los ojos tristes,” all of which reached Number 1 in her home country and in several Latin American charts. Between the mid-80s and early 90s, she released three albums which enjoyed moderate success and continued touring throughout the world. During the 2000s and 2010s, Jeanette spent most of her time collaborating with established Spanish pop acts such as Raphael, Miqui Puig, and Coque Malla.
