The Kastelruther Spatzen came together in 1975 in their namesake hometown of Kastelruth to play popular pop music. After a few line-up changes, 1983 is considered the official founding year. Their first single "Das Mädchen mit den erloschenen Augen" and their debut album Viel Spass und Freude followed in the same year. With their first releases, their fame quickly spread beyond their native South Tyrol in German-speaking countries. in 1990, the group presented itself to a wider audience at the renowned Grand Prix of Folk Music. The Kastelruther Spatzen win the music competition with artists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the song "Tränen passen nicht zu dir". This success marks their final breakthrough. In the decades that followed, they were showered with awards thanks to their down-to-earth attitude and their songs about their homeland. The Kastelruther Spatzen receive dozens of gold and platinum records and win music prizes, including eleven folk music crowns and thirteen Echos. Since 1985, the fan community has come together at the annual Spatzenfest, which attracts tens of thousands of folk music fans from all over Europe. in 2021, the Kastelruther Spatzen, led by singer Norbert Rier, keyboardist Albin Gross, saxophonist Valentin Silbernagl, bassist Karl Heufler, drummer Rüdiger Hemmelmann, singer and guitarist Kurt Dasser and trumpet player Walter Mauroner, hit number 1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with their 38th studio album HeimatLiebe. In 2023, the Kastelruther Spatzen release their 40th studio album, Herz und Heimat. At the same time, the best-of album 40 Jahre - Geschichten, die das Leben schreibt is released in the same year. The album Friedensadler follows in October 2024. Once again, the Kastelruther Spatzen achieve top 10 positions in the German-language charts.
