Prominent Japanese pop group King & Prince, rose to fame in 2018 after their debut single “Cinderella Girl”, sold over half a million copies in its first week - an unprecedented feat in the J-pop industry. The group emerged under the guidance of Johnny & Associates, one of Japan's most influential talent agencies, known for launching the careers of many successful pop performers. Initially formed as two separate units, "Mr. King" and "Prince," during a Johnny's Jr. event in 2015, their popularity led to the merger of the two units to form King & Prince and the group officially debuted on May 23, 2018, with six members: Sho Hirano, Ren Nagase, Kaito Takahashi, Yuta Kishi, Yuta Jinguji, and Genki Iwahashi. The hit debut single served as the theme song for the drama Boys Over Flowers Season 2, earning them the Best Theme Song award at the 97th Television Drama Academy Awards in 2018 and King & Prince embarked on a sold-out nationwide arena tour, releasing “Memorial”, later that year which also topped the Oricon Singles Chart and was certified double platinum. After taking home the award for New Artist of the Year at the 33rd Japan Gold Disc Awards, their self-titled debut album, released on June 19, 2019, soared to Number 1, a trend that continued with subsequent releases: L& (2020), Re:Sense (2021), Made In (2022), and Peace (2023). Notable singles such as “Tsukiyomi” (2022), “Irodori” (2022), and “Life Goes On” (2023) surpassed their debut single in sales. Despite this success, however, the group saw the departure of most of its members between 2021 and 2023, leaving Ren Nagase and Kaito Takahashi to continue the project. In May 2024, the duo released the EP halfmoon / moooove!! (Special Edition), seeing its respective singles top the charts, once again. Their 6th album Re:ERA was released on December 14, 2024.
