Founded in the Northern Territory in 2020, King Stingray is an Australian surf rock band formed by friends Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (vocals) and Roy Kellaway (guitar); descendants of the founding members of Australian band Yothu Yindi. Joining them in 2020 was Dimathaya Burarrwanga (didgeridoo/guitar), Campbell Messer (bass/banjo) and Lewis Stiles (drums), and by October, they had released their debut single “Hey Wanhaka”, followed by their infectious Summer hit “Get Me Out” in January 2021. The single was the number 1 Most Played Australian Track on triple J, earning the band a nomination for Independent Song of the Year at the Australian Independent Record (AIR) awards and the title of triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year. The band’s third single “Milkumana”, released in August 2021, blended both English and Yolŋu lyrics, and together with “Get Me Out” was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2022 APRA awards. In March 2022, King Stingray were invited to join Australian band Midnight Oil during their Resist tour, before releasing their fifth single “Let’s Go” in May 2022. Their debut self-titled studio album King Stingray was released on August 5, 2022, peaking at number 6 on the ARIA Charts.
