MFÖ

Alternately known as both "Mazhar-Fuat-Özkan" and "Mazhar ve Fuat", MFÖ is a Turkish band whose career dates back to 1971. Co-founders Mazhar Alanson and Fuat Güner previously played together in the band Carefree, and they continued collaborating after Carefree's breakup during the early 1970s. Türküz Türkü Çağırırız, their debut album, was released in 1973, with the duo billing itself as "Mazhar ve Fuat." The record was a commercial failure, prompting Alanson and Güner to form a new band, İpucu Beşlisi. This group's lineup included bass Özkan Uğur. Although İpucu Beşlisi proved to be a short-lived act, the chemistry between Alanson, Güner, and Uğur proved to be too potent to ignore, and the three eventually found commercial success with 1984's Ele Güne Karşı Yapayalnız, their first album released under the MFÖ name. An iconic release in Turkish pop music, Ele Güne Karşı Yapayalnız reached number 1 on the Turkish charts, remaining there for a record-breaking 26 weeks. Peki Peki Anladık followed in 1985 and featured the single "Diday Diday Day," which doubled as Turkey's submission to the 1985 Eurovision Song Contest. A third album, Vak the Rock, followed in 1986, with No Problem appearing in 1987. One year later, MFÖ represented Turkey in the Eurovision Song Competition 1988 with the song "Sufi." Albums like 1990's Geldiler, 1992's Agannaga Rüşvet, 1995's Mazeretim Var Asabiyim Ben, and 2017's Kendi Kendine maintained the band's popularity, even as the three members made time to pursue side projects. After a long battle with cancer, Güner passed away on July 8, 2023, downsizing MFÖ to a duo once again and reigniting public support for the band's music, with 1984's "Ele Güne Karşı" subsequently returning to Turkey's Top 100 Apple Music chart.
