An alternative-rock band from Toronto, Canada, Monowhales formed in 2017 under the original name "Ginger Ale & the Monowhales." Featuring vocalist Sally Shaar, drummer Jordan Circosta, guitarist/bassist Zach Zanardo, and synth player Holly Jamieson, the group debuted that same year with "Take It All Back," a single produced by Mstrkrft's Al-P. The song was a hit, reaching Number 25 on Mediabase's Canada Alternative Rock Chart and paving the way for the band's debut EP, Control Freak, which arrived the following year. Following a cross-country tour, Monowhales returned to the studio and recorded a new single "RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down)," which was released in September 2019. It became the highest-charting song by an independent alt-rock band in Canadian history, peaking at Number 2 on the Canada Alternative Rock Chart. Although Holly Jamieson left the band that same year, Monowhales' popularity continued to grow, with the group winning "Best Alternative Artist or Group of the Year" at the 2019 Canadian Music Conference and "Ontario Indie Recording Artist of the Year" at other 2019 Forest City London Music Awards. Continuing to rack up hits on the Alternative Rock Chart, the group released 2020's "All or Nothing" (a Number 6 hit) and 2021's "Out With The Old" (a Number 5 hit) while prepping for the release of Monowhale's full-length debut, Daytona Beach. Released in 2021, Daytona Beach also included "RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down)."
