Nina Kraviz

One of the first women to become a globe-trotting, headlining techno DJ, Nina Kraviz grew up in rural Siberia, but made her way through post-communist Russia to play at Ibiza's superclubs, the world's biggest dance festivals and even an afterparty at the Great Wall of China. Born in the city of Irkustk, the capital of eastern Siberia, she was something of an outsider at school, but was mesmerised by her father's extensive collection of rock, disco and jazz records, discovering dance music through the late-night Europa Plus radio network. During the late 1990s she also wrote for a music magazine and hosted her own college radio shows, and after moving to Moscow to study dentistry in 2000, she worked in a hospital for war veterans by day and at night became part of a club scene obsessed with Chicago house, ambient techno, rare funk and obscure electronic music. Her first recordings as a producer and a singer were with the experimental trio My Space Rocket and their track 'Amok' released by Greg Wilson's B77 Records label in 2007, before she started creating tracks under the moniker Damela Ayer and running parties at the Propaganda nightclub in Moscow. Her tracks 'Voices' and 'I Am Gonna Get You' brought her to a wider, international audience in 2009, and her debut, self-titled album for Radio Slave's Rekids label in 2012 helped shape her trademark minimal, metallic techno bleeps and swelling, monotonous, dreamy grooves. Her tracks 'Ghetto Kraviz' and 'Desire' also became calling cards on the underground dance scene and as her career as an acclaimed, boundary-pushing DJ-producer began to take off, she released her second album 'Mr. Jones' in 2013 and founded her own label called Trip. Her popular mix albums for 'Fabric 91' and 'DJ-Kicks' also showed her love of trippy acid house trances and intense and vulnerable dancefloor journeys and she was named DJ of the Year by Mixmag in 2017.
