Snappy J-pop quartet The Dance for Philosophy, also known as Philosophy No Dance, underscore its brightly colored J-pop bops with fab fashion and dance routines. With a retro twist that draws inspiration from Japans’s chintzy city pop of the 1980s and 1970s disco and funk, the girl group adds a dash of R&B to create a groove-laden sound. Comprising members Mariri Okutsu, Maria Sato, Haru Hinata and Otaha Totsuka, The Dance for Philosophy assembled in 2015 (with original fifth member Ichikawa Nanako leaving later that year) and released its debut album, Funky but Chic, in 2016. With the assistance of producer Keitaro Kamo, in 2017 the group scored a hit with “Dance Founder”, which was featured on its second album The Founder, also released that year. Third album Excelsior followed in 2019, and in 2020 the group released its remix album Sapiosexual.
