Proyecto Uno is a pioneering Dominican-American musical group that has fused hip-hop, Latin rhythms, and house music since the early 1990s. The group was formed in New York City by Nelson Zapata, who initially sought to create a blend of hip-hop and merengue, a popular Dominican dance music. With the incorporation of Magic Juan Atkins, Johnny Salgado, and Erik Morales, Proyecto Uno evolved into a unique blend, often referred to as Merenhouse or Merengue house. Even though the group made its official recording debut in 1991 with the release of their first album Todo el Mundo, it wasn't until 1993 that they finally broke into the mainstream with their second full-length, In Da House. The album featured the hit single "El Tiburón," which gained international popularity and is now considered a classic Latin dance track. Other tracks from the LP include the hit singles "Está Pega'o" and "Another Night." Over the following years, and despite several lineup changes, Proyecto Uno continued to gain traction with subsequent albums like New Era (1996), 4 (1999), Pura Gozadera (2002), Evolution (2006), Original (2013), and Orgánico (2018). Throughout their career, the group has earned multiple awards and accolades, including Rap Album of the Year at the 1997 Billboard Latin Music Awards and Album of the Year at the 2003 Premios Lo Nuestro.
