Best song for singles like "Talking Backwards," "Paper Cup," and "Water Underground," Real Estate is an indie rock band hailing from Ridgewood, New Jersey. The group was co-founded in 2008 by frontman Martin Courtney, bassist Alex Bleeker, lead guitarist Matt Mondanile, and drummer Etienne Pierre Duguay. Courtney, Bleeker, and Mondanile had all grown up together, and they formed Real Estate during a summer break as college students. "Suburban Beverage," the band's debut single, was released in 2009, as well as the full-length album Real Estate. Although neither the song nor the self-titled album reached the Billboard charts, Real Estate was a critically-acclaimed release that earned the band a record deal with the British label Domino. Days followed in 2011, reaching number 52 on the Billboard 200 and spawning the singles "It's Real" and "Easy," both of which reached the Top 20 on the UK Singles Chart. 2014's Atlas marked Real Estate's commercial peak, with the album charting at number 34 on the Billboard 200, number 36 in Ireland, and number 7 on the UK Independent Albums Chart. The album's first single, "Talking Backwards," hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart, and number 9 on the UK Single Sales chart, giving Real Estate a Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. 2017's In Mind earned Real Estate its first Adult Alternative Airplay hit with "Darling," which reached number 24, and 2020's The Main Thing earned a second Adult Alternative Airplay hit the Sylvan Esso duet "Paper Cup." Four years later, the group returned too the charts with Daniel, whose lead single "Water Underground" hit number 16 on Adult Alternative Airplay.
