Ryoko Shinohara is a Japanese singer and actress born on August 13, 1973 in Kiryū, Gunma, Japan. She began her music career in 1991 with the release of her single "Koi wa Chanson" followed by "Squall" (1992) and "Sincerely" (1994). Her debut album, Ryoko from Tokyo Performance Doll, was released in 1993, however it was the song "Itoshisa to Setsunasa to Kokoro Zuyosa to", written and produced by Tetsuya Komuro that proved to be a breakthrough hit, staying at No. 1 on Oricon's singles chart for two weeks and peaking at No. 3 on Oricon's year-ending singles chart. It also made Shinohara the first female artist in Japan to sell two million singles, earning her considerable accolades at the 36th Japan Record Awards, the 27th Japan Cable Awards and the Japan Gold Disc Awards, respectively. Shinohara's second album, Lady Generation: Shukujo no Jidai, was released in 1995 and reached number 1 on the charts. She released several more singles in the following years, including "Shiawase wa Soba ni Aru", "Party o Nukedasō!", "Goodbye Baby", "Blow Up" and "A Place in the Sun", however, her musical output saw waning commercial reception in the latter half of the decade, at which point she began concentrating on her acting career. In 2000, she released the single "Rhythm to Rule" followed by "Someday Somewhere" in 2001 and "Time of Gold" with Junpei Shiina in 2003. After an extended musical hiatus, Shinohara reunited with Komuro in 2022 to re-record "Itoshisa to Setsunasa to Kokoro Zuyosa to" for the highly anticipated video game Street Fighter 6.
