Since its creation in 2017, the J-pop girl group Sandal Telephone has gone through several incarnations before re-emerging as a trio consisting of idols Erika Fujii, Natsu Kagami, and Mai Komachi. Originally a five-piece named Shuengo Buppan, they made their official live debut at the 2017 Idol Yokocho Summer Festival and made appearances at the @JAM EXPO and Tokyo Idol Festival before calling it quits in December of that year. In 2018, Shuengo Buppan reappeared with a new lineup and continued to tour and perform throughout Japan but found themselves on the verge of breaking up once again due to several members leaving the group. After renaming themselves Sandal Telephone (inspired by a Neon Genesis Evangelion character), the three remaining members released their first single "Manatsu no Nioi" in 2019, followed by "Magic All Night" and "Follow You Follow Me" in 2020. That year, they also issued their debut EP Step by Step. In 2021, they scored their first charting effort with the mini-album SYSTEMATIC, which reached Number 11 on the Oricon charts. The group's studio debut REFLEX appeared in 2022 and climbed to Number 22 on the Billboard Japan Albums Chart.
