Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 9, 1988, Jonathan Josiah Wise aka Sepentwithfeet grew up in a religious family and sang gospel music as a child. He directed a choir and also studied classical music and opera at Philadelphia University, before turning away to emerge on the soul scene. After a stint in Paris, he moved to New York and signed with the Tri Angle label, which released his debut EP Blisters (2015), with the collaboration of producer Haxan Cloak. Released in 2018, his debut album Soil, featuring collaborators Clams Casino, Katie Gately and producer Paul Epworth, is warmly received by critics for its musical diversity between R&B, gospel and classical influences. He went on to collaborate with Brockhampton, Ellie Goulding, Ty Dolla $ign, and in 2020 released the Wynne Bennett-produced EP Apparition on the Secretly Canadian label, as well as the album Deacon (2021), followed by Deacon's Grove. Requested by artists such as Moby and Björk, he composes incidental music for Heart of Brick and works on the album Grip (2024), featuring guests Ty Dolla $ign, Yanga Yaya, Mick Jenkins and Orion Sun. An extended version, Grip Sequel, is released in 2025.
