Born on December 25, 1981 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Sonya Yoncheva is an operatic soprano with a Baroque music background. She became an internationally acclaimed star in many of the top opera houses after her 2013 stand-in appearance at New York City's Metropolitan Opera in Verdi's Rigoletto. Born in Bulgaria's second biggest city, Plovdiv, she studied music as a child and attended the National School for Music and Dance in her homeland. She appeared as the host of a music show on television, won local competitions and studied at the Geneva Conservatory. She had a stint with conductor William Christie's Baroque Les Arts Florissants ensemble and, following her breakthrough at the Met, she has performed at venues around the world including the Royal Opera House in London in 2016. Her debut album Paris, Mon Amour (2015), performed with the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana conducted by Frédéric Chaslin, went to Number 17 on Billboard's Classical Albums Chart. Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (2016), with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, reached Number 7. The Verdi Album (2018), performed with Munich Radio Orchestra conducted by Massimo Zanetti, went to Number 20. In March 2021, Sonya Yoncheva released the album Rebirth.
