Joao Michel Diau, aka Sugar MMFK, is a German-born rapper with Angolan roots; his parents fled from the civil war in their home country and settled in Bonn. Drawing on his African heritage, 2015 saw him release his first independent recording 'Lost City' as part of the 'Ohrfeigenmixtape' project. The success of the project enabled him to travel outside of Germany and come to the attention of French rapper, Booba, who championed him. Following extensive touring and the controversial release and re-release of his 2017 single 'Lolito', he released a free track before finally signing a recording contract with Bantu Nation, an affiliate of Universal Music, in 2018. This resulted in several singles as well as collaborations with fellow rappers SAMY, NU, G-Mac and Des. Life took a turn in 2019 when he was threatened with deportation to Angola by the city of Bonn authorities due to an alleged criminal past. This was contested with some 35,000 people signing a petition to fight the ruling, which was put on hiatus. In November of the same year he was included on the politically inspired 'Dark Chapter' by Max Herre along with Megan and Dirk von Lowtzow.
