British neo-soul singer Tawiah was raised in a strongly religious household, performing regularly as a vocalist in the Pentecostal church attended by her family. At 14 she was accepted to the highly-regarded performing-arts oriented BRIT School, an institution that counts that counts Adele and Leona Lewis among its alumni, as well as Amy Winehouse, to whom Tawiah was regularly compared. Not long after graduation she put together an early EP, 2007’s In Jodi’s Bedroom, gaining notoriety for the song “Every Step”. She gained major visibility within the music industry becoming the vocalist for Mark Ronson’s touring band, an experience that honed her live chops. She performed with numerous high-profiles singers including Corinne Bailey Rae, Cee-lo, and Ghostpoet She toured behind her 2017 EP Recreate, and after a decade of paying dues she finally released her first album, Starts Again, in 2019. The LP captured her powerful, soulful voice, as well as her ability to synthesize sounds from other musical idioms.
