German music producer and DJ Christian Friedrich Johannes Büttner, known to the public as TheFatRat, was born in Göttingen on June 1, 1979. He was encouraged musically from an early age, playing the flute at the age of four and taking piano lessons from the age of six. Over time, his desire to compose music himself and to professionalize his work grew. He became a full-time musician in 2001 and earned his money at the beginning of his career with commissioned productions for TV, radio and advertising and with compositions for other artists. in 2010, for example, he produced the song "Mignon Mignon" for the animated, singing marmot René la Taupe, which became a number 1 hit in France. He also co-wrote the Lupe Fiasco song "Audubon Ballroom", which was featured on the US Top 5 album Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 (2012). in 2011, he released his debut EP Do Be Do Be Do and subsequently focused on releasing his own songs. in 2014, he was featured on the soundtrack of the video game Rocket League with "Infinite Power!" and landed another hit with "Unity" . TheFatRat's online community played a big part in his success. He understood the principle of internet sharing and remix culture early on and allowed his songs to be used freely in other works. As a result, his fame in the glitch-hop scene grew considerably within a very short space of time. All this without much more information about him being known. In May 2016, however, he released a video in which he answered numerous personal fan questions and showed his face for the first time. A few months later, his second EP Jackpot was released via Universal Music. The collaboration with the major label paid off, as the mini-album climbed to number 23 in the US dance charts. in 2018, Büttner, himself a passionate gamer, also released the album Warrior Songs within the video game Dota 2. Via his own label The Arcadium, he released the EP Classics in 2020 and the album Parallax in 2021 and frequently performed as a live DJ at e-sports events.
