Thélème

Thélème is an early music ensemble founded in 2013 by bass and conductor Jean-Christophe Brosse. Trained as a classical guitarist, he studied singing with Howard Crook and developed an interest in early music, which he deepened at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Evelyn Tubb and Gerd Türk. Following courses in choral and orchestral conducting, he collaborates on several stage projects, performs contemporary music with SoloVoices and teaches in Basel. The Thélème ensemble, which he has been directing since 2013, aims to give a fresh perspective to early polyphony, by confronting it with classical and contemporary works. Thus, after the album Moment Musical: Franz Schubert & Clément Janequin, une Amitié Imaginaire, released on the Coviello Classics label in 2017, then Amour et Mars, bringing together pieces by Claude Le Jeune and Janequin in 2019, Mutations. Les Chimères de Clément Janequin (2020) alternates songs by Janequin, Lassus and Clemens Non Papa with compositions by Jannik Giger, Mike Svoboda and Betsy Jolas. Giger is back in the spotlight in 2021 with Krypta, produced like the previous album with the saxophone quartet Xasax and another Swiss group, Unorthodoxjukebox O. Also in 2021, Thélème inaugurates its new contract with the Aparté label with the album Baisiez Moy, delving into the repertoire of Josquin Desprez. In 2024, All We Get Is Life features John Cage and John Dowland, with the participation of Sting on "Shape of My Heart".
